歷史背景Historical background
清真禮拜總堂位於中環些利街三十號，一九一五至一九一六年由孟買商人Haji Mohamed Essack Elias捐建，取代同一地點一八四九年建成的舊清真寺，是香港現存最古老的清真寺，可容約四百人聚禮。早期教徒多為來自印度次大陸的商人、水手、士兵、警察及獄吏。建築以混凝土及磚建成，呈東西向長方形，東為入口，西為朝向麥加天房的吉布拉牆。設有圓頂尖塔、多葉尖拱門廊、彩色玻璃窗上尖拱、八邊形穹頂、米哈拉布及庫法體書法裝飾。二〇二二年列為法定古蹟。
Jamia Mosque at 30 Shelley Street, Central, was built between 1915 and 1916 with donations from the Bombay merchant Haji Mohamed Essack Elias, replacing the old mosque on the same site that dated from 1849. It is the oldest mosque in Hong Kong and can hold a congregation of about 400. Its early worshippers were mainly Muslims from the Indian subcontinent working as merchants, sailors, soldiers, policemen and prison guards. Built of concrete and bricks on an east-west axis, it has a minaret crowned by a dome, multifoil pointed archways, an octagonal dome over the prayer hall, a mihrab on the Qibla wall and Kufic calligraphy. Declared a monument in 2022.
