歷史背景Historical background
羅屋位於柴灣吉勝街，是柴灣碩果僅存的傳統客家民居，因原戶主姓羅而得名，至今已有二百多年歷史。羅氏十七世祖一房於清乾隆年間（一七三六至一七九五年）遷居柴灣；隨着新市鎮發展，村落陸續清拆，羅屋得以保留。羅屋是典型的三間兩廊式客家民居，布局簡約對稱，中央為正廳，正廳與大門之間設天井，天井兩旁為建有閣樓的房間、廚房和雜物房；屋外空地俗稱「禾坪」，是村民曬穀、晾衣和聚會的地方。羅屋其後修復為羅屋民俗館，一九八九年列為法定古蹟。
Law Uk ('House of the Law family') on Kut Shing Street, Chai Wan, is the only traditional Hakka village house surviving in the district. An ancestor of the Law clan's seventeenth generation settled in Chai Wan during the Qianlong reign (1736-1795), and the house is over 200 years old. A typical 'three-bay, two-chamber' Hakka dwelling, it has a symmetrical plan: a central hall, a light well between the door and the hall, and bedrooms with lofts, a kitchen and a storeroom beside the well. Its open forecourt, the woping, served for drying grain and clothes and for gatherings. The former Urban Council's Museums Select Committee decided in May 1976 to conserve it as the Law Uk Folk Museum; it was fully restored and declared a monument in 1989.
