歷史背景Historical background
前水警總部是香港現存最古老的政府建築之一，1884年落成，由主樓、馬廄和信號塔（俗稱圓屋）組成。自建成至1996年，這裡一直是水警基地，僅日佔時期（1941至1945年）被日軍徵用作海軍基地。主樓原為兩層，1920年代加建一層，東南及西南翼曾作已婚警員宿舍。信號塔為向海港船隻報時而建，1907年報時球服務遷往大包米訊號山後停用。日佔期間草坪下挖有地道，戰後為安全計封閉並重鋪草坪。政府2003年推出古蹟旅遊項目，2009年完成活化，改名「1881 Heritage」。1994年列為法定古蹟。
One of Hong Kong's oldest surviving government buildings, the former Marine Police Headquarters was completed in 1884, comprising a main building, a stable block and a signal tower. The Marine Police occupied it until 1996, except during the Japanese Occupation (1941-1945), when the Japanese navy used it as a base. The main building originally had two storeys, a third being added in the 1920s; its wings served as married quarters. The signal tower, built to signal time to ships in the harbour, fell out of use in 1907 when the service moved to Signal Hill. Tunnels dug beneath the lawn during the occupation were blocked up after the war. A heritage tourism project completed in 2009 turned the site into '1881 Heritage'. It was declared a monument in 1994.
