歷史背景Historical background
前政務司官邸位於大埔元洲仔，一九〇六年落成時，建於吐露港灣頭一個名為元洲仔的小島上，並以一條堤道連接陸地。這座樓高兩層、設有開放式遊廊的建築，是二十世紀初殖民地建築的典型例子。官邸原為理民官宿舍，其後成為新界政務司的官邸，一直與新界行政關係密切，至一九八五年為止；一九四九年起先後有十五位政務司在此居住。現時建築由世界自然基金會香港分會用作保育教育中心。一九八三年列為法定古蹟。
Island House, Yuen Chau Tsai, Tai Po, was completed in 1906, when it stood on a small islet of that name near the head of Tolo Harbour, linked to the mainland by a causeway. The two-storey building with open verandahs is a classic example of early twentieth-century colonial architecture. Erected as quarters for the District Officer, it later became the official residence of the Secretary for District Administration and was tied to the New Territories administration until 1985; fifteen District Commissioners lived there from 1949. It is now used by WWF Hong Kong as a Conservation Studies Centre. It was declared a monument in 1983.
