歷史背景Historical background
馬場先難友紀念碑位於銅鑼灣掃桿埔，一九二二年落成，是全港唯一悼念一九一八年跑馬地馬場大火死難者的紀念碑。大火發生於二月二十六日周年大賽第二日賽事，華洋死難者超過六百人。災後東華醫院即時賑濟，時任港督梅含理指示把死者合葬於黃泥涌對面的咖啡園，東華醫院主席唐溢川遂徵集設計，最後採用工務司署何想的方案。紀念碑分三層，設涼亭、紀念牌樓及一對化寶塔，以花崗石階貫連，護土牆呈弧形，設計糅合中西建築元素。紀念碑於二〇一五年列為法定古蹟。
The Race Course Fire Memorial stands at So Kon Po, Wan Chai, above today's Hong Kong Stadium. Erected in 1922, it is the only memorial in Hong Kong dedicated to the victims of the 1918 Race Course fire. The blaze broke out on 26 February 1918, the second day of the annual races, killing over 600 people. Tung Wah Hospital gave prompt relief, Governor Sir Francis Henry May ordered the dead to be buried together at Coffee Garden across Wong Nai Chung, and Tung Wah's chairman Tong Yat-chuen held a design competition won by Ho Sheung. The memorial has three tiers with pavilions, an arch and a pair of pagodas linked by granite steps, combining Western and Chinese elements. It was declared a monument in 2015.
