歷史背景Historical background
東蓮覺苑位於跑馬地山光道，是何東爵士與妻子何張靜蓉（法名蓮覺）一九三五年創建的佛寺，苑名取二人名字而成。何張靜蓉是佛教徒，一九三〇年代初創辦寶覺義學校及寶覺佛學社，為女子提供教育與培育尼眾，苑舍落成後遷入。有別於山林寺院，苑舍位處住宅區，是香港市區佛教道場的先導；建築外形儼如一艘巨船，象徵大乘佛教度眾生到彼岸。苑舍由建築師馮駿設計，採西式結構，但飛簷、斗栱、琉璃瓦頂等裝飾保留傳統中式風格。東蓮覺苑於二〇一七年列為法定古蹟。
Tung Lin Kok Yuen, in Happy Valley, is a Buddhist monastery founded in 1935 by Sir Robert Ho Tung and his wife Lady Clara Ho Tung, taking its name from both. A Buddhist, Lady Clara founded the Po Kok Free School and the Po Kok Buddhist Institute in the early 1930s to educate women and train nuns; the completed monastery later housed both. Unlike traditional mountain monasteries, it stood in a residential area, pioneering the urban Buddhist temple in Hong Kong. Its arrowhead plan and ship-like form symbolise the Mahayana ideal of ferrying all beings to the 'other shore' of enlightenment. Designed by architect Fung Tsun, it uses Western structures while keeping Chinese decorations such as flying eaves, brackets and glazed-tile roofs. It was declared a monument in 2017.
