歷史背景Historical background
東龍洲石刻位於西貢東龍洲北岸，是本地最早有文獻記載的石刻，也是香港境內所知最大的石刻。王崇熙於一八一九年編制的《新安縣志》有「石壁畫龍，在佛堂門，有龍形刻於石側」的記載。石刻高約一點八米、長約二點四米，從其風化情況推斷，刻鑿年代可能相當久遠。東龍洲石刻於一九七九年列為法定古蹟。
The Rock Carving on Tung Lung Chau, on the island's northern coast, is the earliest documented rock carving in Hong Kong and the largest ever found locally. The Xin'an Gazetteer, compiled by Wang Chong Xi in 1819, records a dragon painted on a rock face at Fat Tong Mun, with a dragon form carved on the side of the stone, identifying the pattern as a dragon. The carving is about 1.8 metres high and 2.4 metres long, and its degree of weathering suggests it may be of considerable age. It was declared a monument in 1979.
