歷史背景Historical background
東華義莊位於薄扶林大口環道，一八九九年建成，前身是於一八七五年由上環文武廟出資的堅尼地城義莊；一八九九年政府批出大口環土地另建，遂名「東華義莊」。義莊為客死異鄉的華人提供原籍安葬服務，暫存棺柩骨殖，再運返出生地安葬，成為上世紀環球慈善網絡的樞紐。義莊現有兩個大堂及七十二間莊房，建築兼具中國傳統與現代西式風格。義莊於二〇〇三至二〇〇四年大規模修復，獲二〇〇五年聯合國教科文組織亞太區文物修復獎。東華義莊於二〇二〇年列為法定古蹟。
The Tung Wah Coffin Home on Sandy Bay Road, Pok Fu Lam, was established in 1899. Its predecessor is believed to be a Kennedy Town coffin home built in 1875 with funds from the Man Mo Temple. In 1899 the Government granted a plot at Sandy Bay for a new one, which took the name Tung Wah Coffin Home. Drawing on Hong Kong's entrepot position and Tung Wah's overseas networks, it stored the coffins and bones of Chinese who died abroad for return home for burial, becoming a hub of a global charity network. It now has two halls and 72 rooms, mixing traditional Chinese and modern Western styles, and won a 2005 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award after 2003-2004 restoration. It was declared a monument in 2020.
