歷史背景Historical background
香港天文台坐落九龍一座小山之上，1883年成立，1912年獲命名為「皇家香港天文台」。天文台大樓屬維多利亞殖民風格，為長方形兩層磚砌粉飾建築，以拱形窗和長遊廊為特色。授時是天文台成立初期的主要職責之一，藉此為船隻和海港提供準確時間。隨着技術和運作部門陸續遷往附近新址，舊大樓改作台長辦公室及行政中心。1997年7月1日香港回歸後，天文台恢復原名。大樓1984年列為法定古蹟，位於彌敦道134A號。
The Hong Kong Observatory stands on a small hill in Kowloon and was established in 1883, being designated the Royal Observatory, Hong Kong in 1912. Built in the Victorian-Colonial style, it is a rectangular two-storey plastered brick structure with arched windows and long verandas. Providing accurate time was one of its main duties at the outset, serving ships and the harbour. As technical and operational units moved to new premises nearby, the old building came to house the office of the directorate and serve as the administration centre. The Observatory resumed its original name on 1 July 1997, when Hong Kong returned to Chinese sovereignty. It was declared a monument in 1984, at 134A Nathan Road.
