歷史背景Historical background
舊赤柱警署位於赤柱村道八十八號，一八五九年建成，是香港現存最古老的警署。警署早年是港島最南端的前哨站，戰略地位重要，故常供警隊及英軍聯合使用。日佔期間（一九四一至一九四五年），日軍曾徵用該處作分區總部，並加建殮房。戰後恢復作警署，直至一九七四年，此後用作多個政府部門的分區辦事處及出租。建築樓高兩層，建造簡樸，正面外牆設有柱廊，具古典風格；屋內仍保留原有槍房的磚砌圓拱形天花及壁爐。舊赤柱警署於一九八四年列為法定古蹟。
Built in 1859, the Old Stanley Police Station at 88 Stanley Village Road is the oldest surviving police station in Hong Kong. As the most southerly outpost on Hong Kong Island, it held strategic value and was used from time to time by both the police and the British Army. During the Japanese Occupation (1941-1945), the Japanese Gendarmerie used it as a local headquarters and added a mortuary. It resumed service as a police station after the war until 1974, after which it housed sub-offices of several government departments and was rented out. The two-storey building is simply built, with a colonnaded verandah giving its facade a Classical look; the domed brick ceiling of the original gunroom and fireplaces survive. It was declared a monument in 1984.
