歷史背景Historical background
赤柱清真寺位於赤柱監獄範圍內，一九三六至一九三七年建成，是香港第二古老的清真寺，亦是唯一設於監獄內的清真寺。它由監獄署（今懲教署）的印度及巴基斯坦裔穆斯林職員，聯同本地印度社群發起、出資及興建。建築以巴基斯坦拉合爾的巴德夏希清真寺為藍本，沿東西軸線對稱佈局，朝向麥加，設平頂混凝土屋頂、城垛式女兒牆，以及馬蹄形與蔥形拱的拱廊立面，並以類似尖塔的柱子作裝飾，取代一般尖塔。建築大體保留原貌。二〇二六年列為法定古蹟，基於保安及運作理由不對外開放。
Stanley Mosque, inside Stanley Prison, was built between 1936 and 1937. It is the second oldest mosque in Hong Kong and the only one within a prison compound. It was initiated, funded and built by the Indian and Pakistani Muslim staff of the Prisons Department, together with the local Indian community. Modelled on the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, Pakistan, it has a symmetrical east-west plan facing Makkah, a flat concrete roof edged by a crenellated parapet, and an arcaded facade with horseshoe and ogee arches; minaret-like columns stand in place of a true minaret. The building retains much of its original form. Declared a monument in 2026, it is not open to the public for security reasons.
