歷史背景Historical background
和平紀念碑位於中環，一九二三年五月二十四日由時任香港總督司徒拔爵士揭幕，是香港首座為紀念第一次世界大戰殉難者而正式建造的紀念碑。碑身最初刻上英文「The Glorious Dead」及年份「1914-1918」，後來補刻「1939-1945」悼念二戰殉難者。一九八〇年代，側面再刻上「英魂不朽 浩氣長存」八個中文字，表明紀念碑紀念所有殉難者，尤其在港捐軀的陣亡將士。特區政府及相關團體每年在此舉行悼念活動。紀念碑於二〇一三年列為法定古蹟。
The Cenotaph in Central was unveiled on 24 May 1923 by the then Governor Sir Edward Stubbs, and is the first memorial formally built in Hong Kong to commemorate the dead of the First World War. The monument was first inscribed with 'The Glorious Dead' and the years '1914-1918'; '1939-1945' was added later to mourn the victims of the Second World War. In the 1980s eight Chinese characters were carved on one side, making clear that it honours all who fell, especially those who died defending Hong Kong. The HKSAR Government and related associations hold commemorative ceremonies here each year. It was declared a monument in 2013.
