歷史背景Historical background
香港大會堂位於中環愛丁堡廣場，是香港第二座大會堂，由時任港督柏立基爵士於一九六二年三月二日正式揭幕，也是全港首座為市民而建的多用途文化建築，先後有五任港督在此舉行就職典禮。建築屬現代主義風格，設計簡樸實用，分為低座、紀念花園和高座三部分，以有蓋通道相連。低座設音樂廳、劇院和展覽廳，高座設婚姻登記處、公共圖書館和演奏廳；紀念花園中央有一座十二邊形的紀念龕，悼念二次大戰保衞香港陣亡的軍民。大會堂臨海，除封閉的表演場地外，各設施均享海景。二〇二二年列為法定古蹟。
Hong Kong City Hall at Edinburgh Place is the second city hall in Hong Kong. Officially opened by Governor Sir Robert Black on 2 March 1962, it was the first multi-purpose cultural complex built for the public, and the inauguration ceremonies of five Governors were held here. In Modernist style, the complex has three parts - the Low Block, the Memorial Garden and the High Block - linked by a covered walkway. The Low Block houses a concert hall, a theatre and a gallery; the High Block a marriage registry, a public library and a recital hall. A twelve-sided Memorial Shrine in the garden honours those who died defending Hong Kong in the Second World War. It was declared a monument in 2022.
